Happy Birthday Luis Liz-Marzán!

February 24, 2026

In late January, past and current members of the Liz-Marzán groups gathered in Vigo to celebrate the 60th birthday of Professor Luis Liz-Marzán and reconnect. Among the well-wishers was Professor Leonardo Scarabelli, who completed his PhD in Luis’s CIC biomaGUNE group before establishing his own independent lab at the University of Cantabria.

In addition to the warm welcome, the event included a relaxed symposium – the “Frontiers in plasmonic nanostructures” in Luis’s honor, where speakers revisited their experiences working with the group.

First, those from the Vigo group presented…

and later, those from CIC biomaGUNE took to the podium.

The talks highlighted the scientific environment Luis fostered and the supportive and collaborative spirit long defining the groups across both institutions.

Adding to the festivities, a special issue of Advanced Optical Materials was recently published in honour of Luis’s 60th birthday. The issue highlights his pioneering contributions to metallic colloidal chemistry and bionanoplasmonics, as well as his dedication to mentorship. The special issue can be found here: https://advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/toc/21951071/2025/13/34

Here’s to the next 60!
